Thomas Ravelli’s clear words about Janne Andersson – and points out the old teammate as the new national team captain

Thomas Ravelli wants to see change in the Swedish national team.
And he has a suggestion for who should take over as national team captain.
– He thinks I should actually take over, says Ravelli to Sportbibeln.

Next year it will be 30 years Thomas Ravelli became a hero during the World Cup in 1994 with his penalty saves. For today’s national team, things are not going as well. Blågult missed the WC 2022 and most likely will not qualify for the EC 2024 in Germany.

The words about Janne Andersson

Thomas Ravelli, 64, continues to follow the national team, and is disappointed with how it has looked in the last couple of years. The former goalkeeper believes that Blågult has “extremely big problems” and that there needs to be a drastic change.

But Ravelli doesn’t necessarily think there needs to be a change in the national team captaincy or that Jan Andersson need to resign.
– My opinion is: If it feels like he can contribute, then of course he should stay, but he must have that feeling himself. If he feels that “no, this is no longer possible”, then that is enough. But I think Janne knows it himself in that case, he tells Sportbibeln.

Ravelli’s new national team captain

Although Janne Andersson’s future hangs in the balance, his contract expires next year. It is therefore very likely that Sweden will get a new national team captain in the near future.

Then Ravelli knows who he wants to see.
– I think so Jonas Thern, he thinks I should take over actually. He has trained many players to become extremely good and it feels like he gives them incredibly good self-confidence. They go out on the field and dare things and create a game.

Jonas Thern is currently training IFK Värnamo. He has done that since 2019, and in 2021 the club won the Superettan and qualified for the Allsvenskan for the first time in the club’s history.
– Look at Värnamo, the small association is still in the Allsvenskan, it’s really incredible, says Ravelli about Thern’s work at the club.
