The car in question is a Volvo 740 station wagon from 1992 which is for sale in Vernon, New Jersey.
The model itself is certainly nothing remarkable, especially not for us Swedes, and neither is the price of 900 dollars – equivalent to around 9,000 kroner.
What is remarkable, however, is the mileage. The car has covered 737,000 miles, corresponding to over 1,186,000 kilometers.

28 laps around the earth
Even more remarkable is that over 1.1 million of those kilometers are said to have been logged with the original owner behind the wheel.
The car is not in top condition. There is some rust, the drive train vibrates and a brake line needs to be fixed. Also, the battery is dead. With a number of miles corresponding to a full 28 revolutions around the earth on the meter, one can, however, forgive some defects.
There are also not many car models that manage to cover that many miles at all, but Volvo’s 240, 740 and 940 series are well known for their robustness.

A parade branch for Volvo
The robustness of the classic Volvo models is largely due to the fact that they are built in a very traditional way, with the very stable engine at the front and the rear drive through an old-fashioned rigid rear axle.
Even though this Volvo has covered an absolutely incredible distance, it doesn’t come close to the world’s highest-mileage Volvo, which also happens to be the highest-mileage car ever.
The record car is a red Volvo P1800 that was owned by Irv Gordon from Long Island. Gordon bought his Volvo new in 1966, and managed to cover a whopping 3.2 million miles – the equivalent of over 5.1 million kilometers – in the car before his death in November 2018.
