Did this famous character really exist? It all started in this village …
“One for everyone for one!” Who has never heard this emblematic motto of the “three musketeers”, the emblematic heroes of the novel by Alexandre Dumas? And who has never heard of De Artagnan, who has become a great figure in literature since his adventures with Porthos, Athos and Aramis? Model of loyalty, courage and fraternity, this heroic character who continues to fascinate and inspire the French is not only fictitious, he did exist. Embark on a trip in time at the time of the most famous musketeer!
In this picturesque village of France, the shadow of D’Artagnan hovers on all the walls. It was here that it was born in 1615 Charles de Batz de Castelmore, the real of Artagnan, a musketeer in the service of Louis XIV, known for his bravery and his loyalty. If the castle of Castelmore, its first home, is today a private property, each stone of the village continues to perpetrate the memory of the musketeer. The Saint-Pierre church is a first example, this is where the Petit d’Artagnan was baptized.
Much more than a simple village, Lupiac, in the department of Gers in Occitane, is a dream place where the spirit of Artagnan continues to exist thanks to its inhabitants. As a first vibrant tribute, an imposing equestrian statue of D’Artagnan sits on the main square. Then in the Saint-Jacques chapel, the Artagnan museum retraces the life of the musketeer and his time through a superb interactive and immersive journey. Finally, each year in August, the village is organizing a large medieval festival in honor of the musketeer with cape and sword shows and historical reconstructions.

This Gascon village where D’Artagnan reigns supreme is not just about its famous musketeer. Perched at 234 meters above sea level, this village dominates green hills, sunflower fields and perched villages which have not only shaped the imagination of the musketeer. The region around Lupiac is ideal for its hikes and outdoor activities. As a medieval fortress, theEs local artisans perpetuate the manufacture of weapons and costumes, but also local products such as foie gras, duck confit or Armagnac...
Did you know that the commune of Lupiac is in the running, as a representative of the Occitanie region, for the title of the “favorite village of the French” this year 2025? The vote ends this Friday, March 7 at 11:59 p.m. Friday. “Each vote is one more step towards victory (…) Together, let’s make Lupiac the favorite village of the French 2025! All for one, one for all!” launched the mayor of the city. A good hearing!
