Nature names, A names, short or mixed… Certain trends are present every year, but one category of names should no longer be popular with young parents next year, according to the author of the Official 2025 First Names, published by First Editions.
Every year, first names reveal new trends, but most of the time, they follow one another. For several years now, we have seen a strong success for short first names, with one or two syllables (Louis, Liam, Jules, Rose, Eva, Léna), or first names starting with A. According to the predictions of Stéphanie Rapoport and Claire Tabarly Perrin, the authors of the Officiel des prénoms 2025, published by First on September 5, 2024, no fewer than 6 female first names are ranked in the top 20 trending first names for the coming year, or a quarter of the top 20! “The first letter of the alphabet has become the essential initial of many first names at the top” like Ambre, Alba, Alma, Alice, Anna, Agathe, they specify.
Among the other trends, this year we find first names from nature like Ambre, Agathe, Jade, Iris and Rose for girls, but also Léo or Léon which come from the Latin “leo” which means lion. For boys, it is the trend of multicultural first names that is all the rage like Gabriel, in first place in the ranking, but also Noah, Raphaël, Adam, Isaac or even Noé and Aaron, just outside the top 20. Mixed first names are also very popular with future parents, like Eden, Maël(le), Raphaël(le), Sacha… However, the first names Camille and Charlie do not seem to have had the expected success.I expected there to be more unisex first names: I was surprised that Charlie in the feminine did not climb more, while the first name Camille dropped out of the top 20″, Stephanie Rapoport tells us. But another trend, which was still present in 2024, should disappear from the radar next year.
These are in fact compound first names. Indeed, in previous years, certain personalities such as the singer Louanne and Lili-Rose Depp, the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, had carried this trend and contributed to the emergence of these pretty feminine compound first names.Last year, Lili-Rose made it into the national top 200, but this year, this name should not even appear in the top 800 in France.“, confirms Stéphanie Rapoport. “We should nevertheless see the birth of a few little Rose-Alba or even Mohamed Amin“, but without much success compared to other current trends.
