“This time it’s special”

He has been close several times during the season.
But in the end “Mondo” managed to jump 6.23 – and afterwards he pointed out a special detail.
– This time it is very special, he says.

Armand Duplantis has another hugely successful season behind him. He has won WC gold and pretty much every single competition he has competed in, but the big goal apart from the WC was to break a new world record – but before the very last competition he still hadn’t succeeded.

New world record

Mondo has set the bar at 6.23 in many competitions but never really succeeded. In the middle of the summer, he also had problems with a thigh, which made it difficult for him – but he was looking forward to the last competition of the season, the Diamond League final in Eugene. And his feeling would turn out to be absolutely right.

Armand Duplantis had already won the competition in 6.02 – and then he went straight up to the world record height of 6.23. He only needed one jump – and the whole arena exploded.

– There aren’t that many thoughts right now if I’m honest, for me it’s just chaos in my brain. It’s hard to explain but it’s a great feeling. Almost my whole family was here so I can’t complain, Duplantis told SVT afterwards.

Pointing out the detail

Armand Duplantis knew it would be a new record, and he was more than satisfied afterwards.

– I had pretty good self-confidence. I felt that I had one more good race in my body. I felt throughout the outdoor season that I was close to hitting 6.23 and that it’s actually happening… well, it sucks, he says.

It was the same arena that Duplantis set his previous world record of 6.21 – but there was also another detail behind the world record that Mondo likes to highlight; namely the fact that he got to have his brothers in place.

– Every time I break a world record, it feels a little different each time. This time it is very special because my two brothers are here and they are a big reason why I am here today and jumping so well.
