The tax authorities are going to come and spoil the return to school for millions of French people.
Summer, its sun, its holidays, its more peaceful daily life… but also, its taxes! July and August are the two months best suited to disconnecting from the usual routine. However, it quickly comes back at a gallop and immediately gets you back into the swing of things. The summer lightness is going to be disturbed by bad news: a letter from the tax office. While the summer holidays are still not over, the tax authorities are going to send a document to 32 million French people, either on paper or directly on their personal space on the tax website.
If the latest letter from the Directorate General of Public Finances could hide a nice surprise with a tax refund, this time, it will not be the case. None of the recipients of this letter will be able to rejoice by reading the few lines. However, you should not miss it, even if the subject of the email is vague. When an email from the DGFiP with the subject “New documents available” appears in your email inbox, you will have to open it: it will announce that the property tax notice for the year 2024 has been sent to you.
Like every year, the tax authorities send the bill at the end of August. The tax administration announces to Linternaute that it will be sent by email on August 28, 2024 or by La Poste between August 28 and September 20 to owners who are not paying monthly. This represents 20 million French people, who always choose to pay the bill in one go.
Receiving the mail will not be an injunction to pay immediately. The tax authorities are granting the French a period of time to be able to pay their property tax. Those who do not pay online will have until Tuesday, October 15, 2024, while those who pay online will have until Sunday, October 20, at 11:59 p.m.
For owners who are paying monthly, the notice will only arrive on September 20 by email or between September 23 and October 9 by post. If the property tax is increasing, the last monthly payments of October, November and December will be increased in order to fill the gap between the 2023 property tax which was used as the basis for calculating the monthly payments and the actual bill to be paid for 2024.
This year, the property tax will increase by at least 3.9% for all French people. So, if you paid 500 euros in 2023, the bill will be 519.5 euros this year. It will rise to 1039 euros if you paid 1000 euros last year and to 2078 euros if it was 2000 euros last year.
