High blood pressure is among the diseases that are difficult to diagnose unless examination and tests are performed. According to the statements made by experts; Failure to intervene in hypertension, which is a very insidious disease, increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Doctors state that everyone should be aware of the signs of high blood pressure seen in the eye.
Speaking to Express about the issue, famous doctor Mukhtar Bizrah made the following statements in his statement:
“Bloodshot eyes can be a sign of hypertension or high blood pressure because it puts pressure on the blood vessels in the retina. If you notice this, seek medical attention as soon as possible.”
THE RESEARCH REVEALED THE TRUTH
Having bloodshot eyes caused by high blood pressure is known as hypertensive retinopathy. This may also mean that you are at greater risk for some dangerous complications of high blood pressure. A scientific study published in the journal Hypertension in 2013 found that among 2,900 participants with high blood pressure, those with mild hypertensive retinopathy had a 35 percent higher risk of stroke. Those with moderate or severe hypertensive retinopathy had a 137 percent higher risk.
“IT MAY LOOK LIKE A BRIGHT RED PATCH”
Another expert, Niamh McMillan, shared what to look for. “Subconjunctival hemorrhage is different from bloodshot eyes and is a small bleed (similar to a bruise) from one of the small blood vessels on the surface of the eye,” he said.
“This may appear as a bright red patch on the white of the eye and prompts a blood pressure reading as it may be associated with hypertension.” Healthy blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and 120/80 mmHg, while high blood pressure is considered to be 140/90 mmHg or higher.
Dr. “It can be alarming to look in the mirror and notice that your eyes are pink, bloodshot and watery. And while these symptoms can have a variety of different causes, the good news is that many can be treated at home,” says Bizrah.
“The most common cause of pink eye is dryness or irritation of the eyes, which, along with increased tear production, can cause your eyes to leak. Allergic conjunctivitis is especially common among those who suffer from hay fever during peak pollen season in spring and summer. “It can also occur in response to certain triggers, such as a dusty environment or pet fur.”
