This site allows you to find out which emails and passwords have been compromised on the internet.
It is quite difficult to succeed in having a sufficiently secure username/password combo to escape hackers. While it is recommended to have long and complex protections, sometimes this may not even be enough. Indeed, having an extremely secure password that is complicated to guess or decrypt is sometimes not enough.
All it takes is one of your online accounts to suffer a security breach and your data is gone. For example, let’s say you have an Amazon account with an extremely long password that is provided in capital letters and special characters. The day Amazon’s servers are victims of a security breach, hackers will be able to exploit it and steal your credentials very easily.
But then how do we know if our email address or even our phone number is not already compromised? Some websites work with cybersecurity solutions to notify you when your credentials are compromised, but not all.
The site DataBreach was launched in the United States by the company Atlas Privacy which works to maintain control of our personal data on the internet. Its principle is very simple: by entering your email address, username or telephone number, the site will cross-reference this information with known security breaches to inform you if some of your online accounts are compromised.
We did the test with our personal email address. And the site points out a security breach encountered by Deezer, the music streaming solution, in 2019 and which concerned user nicknames and names. This security breach would have been exploited and the data resold on hacking forums. So there is a chance that both of these pieces of information are now out in the wild.
This information can be essential to ensure the security of your data. On another of our email addresses, we found that several of our passwords were compromised on certain sites. This allowed us to reconnect to them and change our identifiers as quickly as possible.
The security of your personal data online should not be neglected. By accessing your accounts, hackers can easily find other information or identifiers linked to more important and sensitive sites, apps or solutions, until reaching the holy grail: your banking credentials. It is therefore advisable to frequently check whether your email addresses are not compromised.
