Measuring beauty using mathematics
To choose the most beautiful celebrity each year, cosmetic surgeon Julian De Silva relies on a mathematical formula that evaluates the symmetry of the face as well as the proportions between its different parts. The formula in question is based on the “golden ratio” equal to approximately 1.6180339. This corresponds to the perfect harmony of the face and would then refer to ideal beauty.
How to proceed ? You must first measure certain areas of the face and compare them with each other. Dimensions are taken from the hairline to a point between the eyes, then from between the eyes to the tip of the nose. The last is done from the tip of the nose to the bottom of the chin.
Then, the surgeon relates these proportions to the golden ratio. The closer they are, the more “beautiful” the person is considered according to science.
Former One Direction singer tops the charts
According to science, the most handsome man in the world this year is Harry Styles. Based on the calculations of Dr. Julian De Silva, the 30-year-old international star comes very close to the golden ratio and thus obtains a score of 98.15%.
This result can only confirm the admiration that his fans have for him. However, this golden ratio is far from being the only reason for this adoration.
