This little-known gem of the Dalmatian coast in Croatia seduces with its crystal clear waters and secret beaches.
This is one of the trending destinations for summer 2024, Croatia. Reservations are exploding for the summer in this country which notably offers superb Mediterranean beaches at still affordable prices. Problem, this is starting to become known and there could be many tourists on the beaches this summer, particularly near Dubrovnik or on the island of Hvar.
Nestled on the sparkling shores of Croatia’s Dalmatian coast lies a seaside resort that, although extremely popular, might still be unknown to you. The Makarska Riviera, located just an hour’s drive from the bustling resort of Split and two and a half hours from Dubrovnik, is the ideal location if you want to avoid some of the busier centers of mainland Croatia while still enjoying the incredible scenery from the country. The Makarska Riviera stretches for 60 kilometers between the towns of Brela and Gradac, at the foot of the incredible Biokovo mountain. This therefore leaves you with choices when it comes to finding a haven of peace.
From the town of Makarska towards the mountains, the region is home to diverse flora and landscapes, making the region the perfect destination for nature lovers, cycling enthusiasts and enthusiastic hikers. On the other side, looking out to sea, you will be greeted by endless views of the crystal clear Adriatic, dotted with islands. Brac and Hvar are therefore easily accessible during boat trips.
Although the seaside resort is now quite busy, especially in summer, the crowds remain much smaller than in Dubrovnik and Split. You will have less impression of suffocation and crowds during a walk in the cobbled and picturesque streets of the old town than in Dubrovnik, assailed by Game of Thrones fans who find landscapes from the famous series there. Although Makarska has gained popularity in recent years, it still remains somewhat untouched.
But make no mistake, it is undoubtedly the beaches that constitute the main attraction of the Makarska Riviera. A vast expanse of pebble shoreline runs alongside the resort, giving way to incredible turquoise water that invites you to take a dip. The waters are generally calm and surprisingly clear.
Beaches near the city center can be crowded, but there are quieter options towards the east of the resort. The Gradska plaža family beach has a large swimming area demarcated by buoys. For photos, go a little further, to Nugal beach, less than 3 kilometers from Makarska port. It is unfortunately much busier but offers superb views from the pedestrian path.
