This really breaks my heart

NCIS was itself a spin-off of JAG when it first aired in 2003. Since then, the crime thriller has received four spin-offs and two more are being planned. However, NCIS: Hawaii didn’t make it past Season 3. CBS pulled the plug. Now there are even fan campaigns underway. But there is one realistic chance of seeing you again with Vanessa Lachey’s Jane Tennant and her colleagues in the NCIS: Hawaiʻi Field Office?

What happens at the end of NCIS: Hawaii?

In the third season of the crime series, everything boils down to the threat of a bioweapon. Jane, her team and guest star LL Cool J from NCIS: LA prevent anything worse from happening and everything looks like a fun evening for the investigators. When Jane comes home in the final episode “Divided We Conquer” (S03E10), she finds her former mentor and CIA agent Maggie Shaw (Julie White), who essentially tells her:

You’ll probably need a drink for what’s coming.

However, we don’t find out what’s coming. Because After this final episode, NCIS: Hawai’i will not continue. Which the show’s team clearly didn’t know beforehand, otherwise they wouldn’t have left us hanging like that.

Fan campaigns and crossover opportunities on NCIS: Hawai’i

Actress Vanessa Lachey thanked fans on Instagram (via Cinemablend) for their support and shared pictures of banner ads that were put up to save the series. There are numerous declarations of love for the series under the hashtag SaveNCISHawaii. This is what a fan writes on X (formerly Twitter):

This really breaks my heart. The first female lead in the NCIS franchise and CBS decides to cancel her? Her tears when she found out she got the role. Vanessa deserves better.

Can NCIS: Hawai’i return in a crossover?

NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder was recently asked by The Wrap about the crossover of the series universe, but he made no promises about a reunion with Hawai’i. Crossovers serve as a means of cross-promotion and advertising of this type is no longer applicable if the series being promoted no longer exists.

Is there hope for a return of NCIS: Hawai’i?

You shouldn’t get your hopes up about it at the moment. The Hawai’i spin-off was canceled because the budget was too high for CBS given the ratings. If you look at them other series in the NCIS universe on, a change of direction is clear.

NCIS: Sydney will be produced in Australia rather than directly by CBS Studios, which could save costs compared to Hawai’i. The upcoming new offshoots are taking a different path than the previous ones.

The NCIS spin-off recipe called for independent new crews in foreign cities. NCIS: Origins, on the other hand, is about a reunion with Gibbs at a young age. Even Mark Harmon is on board as the narrator. Additionally, original stars Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo will return to investigate in Europe in NCIS: Tony & Ziva. Into this nostalgic scheme Apparently Hawai’i doesn’t fit in.

The only hope that remains for the canceled offshoot is a change of heart at CBS. The network already brought back SWAT, but something like that remains a rarity.

You can stream two seasons of NCIS Hawai’i on Paramount+ and Magenta TV.
