Current events, whether national or international, can undermine the morale of the French. However, despite the difficulties, morale has been on the rise in recent months, as demonstrated by an Ifop survey.
Inflation, war in Ukraine, reshuffle… The start of 2024 was rather turbulent in France. What is the state of mind of the French regarding these events? An Ifop-Fiducial survey for Sud Radio questioned the French.
A third of French people say they are optimistic, a figure on the rise
At the start of 2024, only 32% of French people say they are “optimistic” when they think about the future or that of their children. Which means that conversely 68% are rather pessimistic on the issue.
However, it should be noted that the proportion of optimistic French people has been increasing for six months. In fact, there has been +7 points since August 2023. More precisely, it is young people who are the most optimistic: 40% of those under 35 say they are, compared to 28% of those aged 65 and over.

Relative trust in politicians
The survey continues by assessing the confidence that the French place in the government and the head of state on different subjects. The least we can say is that the results are mixed. In fact, no domain receives a confidence rate higher than 50%. At best, we find 41% of respondents saying they trust the executive to “fight against terrorism”.
Concerning areas which relate more to everyday life, such as the fight against unemployment and education, our leaders only receive 36% confidence. Concerning health, confidence decreases further, with 34%. Finally, with regard to the central areas of purchasing power and debt reduction, there is only low confidence, at only 24%.
