2023 is over. It’s time to take stock of environmentally friendly fashion innovations. Who are the good students? The animal protection association Peta has decided.
Animal rights organization Pete was responsible for analyzing the environmental progress made by fashion brands over the last twelve months. The association has published its list of Victories for animals in which she distinguishes the initiatives of several brands. James Fraser, responsible for relations with fashion companies, explains this approach: “Peta celebrates the designers and brands who are helping to put cruelty behind us and put vegan fashion on the catwalks.” Gucci, SMCP (Maje, Sandro, Claudie Pierlot and Fursac), Aigle, Balenciaga and Isabel Marant, all these brands are among the winners of the vegan fashion prices 2023.
What are the prizes won?
Around ten awards were awarded by Peta. From vegan leather to innovative materials, including the most emblematic moments of the year, these trophies cover all the innovations seen in fashion this year. The price of the triple advance for animals has for example been attributed to Isabel funny. The French label has indeed confirmed that it is putting an end to its use of fur, angora and exotic skins in its collections.
For his part, Balenciaga received the prize of best luxury product for one of his coats not quite like the others. This bathrobe-style overcoat is made of vegetable leather Lunaforma material derived from a vegan process, developed specifically for Balenciaga by the American start-up Gozen.
The Italian house Gucci won the trendiest vegan handbag for his Demetra Horsebit 1955. Sold for 2,800 euros, this it bag is made from Demetra, the Italian brand’s alternative to leather. And it was the fashion group SMCP which won the most memorable fashion moment, thanks to its decision to stop using down and other feathers. A real distinction which rewards a significant measure in terms of animal welfare. The price of the the most avant-garde brand was awarded to Ganni, the Copenhagen-based label, for the launch of a line of orange peel handbags with the vegetable imitation leather manufacturer Ohoskin. The Scandinavian brand was also rewarded for its collaboration with the natural materials company Polybion for making a blazer based on bacteria. The Frenchwoman Aigle received the prize for best down-free down jackets for its collection in corn glucose and recycled polyester effective up to -25°C. To finish in style, the iconic fashion moment was attributed to comedian Ryan Gosling, for his role as Ken in the film barbie by Greta Gerwig. During a key scene in the feature film, the actor wore a pair of vegan boots from the French brand Good Guys Don’t Wear Leather. Bad student of the class of 2023, the LVMH group was however elected villain of the year for his continued and unethical use of exotic skins. Can do better.
