This Norwegian war film takes everyone by surprise and climbs

Released at the beginning of January on Netflix, this feature film is attracting subscribers and is in the top 3 most viewed films of the moment on the streaming platform.

The new year has begun and on Netflix it has been synonymous with new entries in the catalog. On the series side, subscribers flocked to I miss youthe new series adapted from Harlan Coben, or caught up on end-of-year releases like SquidGame. On the film side, comedy Papisitter dominates the rankings… but is followed closely by a Norwegian war film that no one saw coming.

Released very confidentially, this feature film is second among the most viewed films of the moment on Netflix in France, and is more widely found in the top 3 in other countries around the world. More generally, it is the first non-English language film most viewed the week of its release, January 1st. And subscribers are being seduced, since this biopic which takes place during the Second World War is rated 7.6/10 on the Internet Movie Database.

Number 24 tells the story of Gunnar Sønsteby, a young 21-year-old apprentice who decides to resist Nazi Germany on the day of the invasion of Norway, in June 1940. He will carry out several sabotages and become the “leader of the gang of Oslo”.

And you will have understood, this film is inspired by the true story of one of the greatest figures of the Resistance in Norway. After the liberation in May 1945, Gunnar Sønsteby received numerous medals and distinctions for his services, and we can even find a statute representing him with his famous bicycle in Oslo. Gunnar Sønsteby died at the age of 94 on May 10, 2012.

Director John Andreas Andersen chose to retrace the story of this Norwegian hero in Number 24. On social networks, Internet users are won over: “a nice Netflix surprise to start the year off right,” comments one of them on X, “masterpiece! Extremely touching!”, praises another. The success is also international, since the 1h51 feature film received a 98% positive rating from the public on Rotten Tomatoes. If this has made you curious, you should go to Netflix to discover this biopic from earlier this year.
