From the start of the 2024 school year, a new feature integrated into the moral and civic education program will be taught from CP onwards.
While schoolchildren are enjoying the summer holidays, the Ministry of National Education has already published its back-to-school circular. Several new features await students for this 2024 school year, including new programs in French and mathematics that will be taught from kindergarten to the end of cycle 2. Another new feature is also integrated into the CP program for moral and civic education, and this is essential to raise awareness among young people from a very young age.
The moral and civic education (EMC) program includes several axes such as “self-knowledge and self-control”; “rules of hygiene and requirement of privacy”; “being a student at the school of the Republic”, and “collective rules and autonomy”. But a whole new discipline awaits young schoolchildren from CP: animal ethics. The awareness modules on respect for pets have in fact been planned since 2021 by the law against animal abuse, but to date, they had not yet been put in place. The Animal Law Foundation (LFDA) is delighted with this new learning which will address the issue of respect due to pets. This is a notable step forward which we should be pleased about.” reacted the foundation on its website.
She specifies that teachers will have the role of helping schoolchildren to distinguish between “personal and collective property”, and to better “understand the respect that is due to the environment and to living things, from familiar spaces to more distant spaces, which are healthy common goods as well as a first requirement of respect for others and life in society.” The foundation also hopes that this module on animal ethics will pave the way to respect for other animals in the broad sense, which are not domestic animals tamed by humans.
