This series available on Netflix adapts a classic of literature. And even if it makes many changes compared to the books, it remains excellent.
Literature is an inexhaustible source for film and series producers, who often use it to create new programs. This saga of novels has also been the subject of several adaptations, the most recent of which is available on Netflix. And while it takes many liberties with the original work, it is nonetheless a very good vintage from the streaming platform.
Published in 1908, Anne of Green Gablesalso known as Anne of Green Gablesis the debut novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. It quickly became an international classic of children’s literature, having been translated into more than 36 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. On Netflix, this story has taken the name Anne with an E.
The plot takes place in the second half of the 19th century and follows the incredible adventures of Anne Shirley, an eleven-year-old Canadian orphan. She is mistakenly sent to the Cuthberts, an elderly brother and sister living on Prince Edward Island, when they had asked for a young boy to work on their farm. But the boundless imagination of young Anne will move them and convince them to raise her as their child.
If you’ve read the books, you’ll understand that the Netflix series takes exactly the same starting point as Lucy Maud Montgomery’s plot. And several adventures that Anne experiences in the novels are also transposed to the screen. But the series is much more serious than the book (which remains relatively light, despite sometimes dramatic events) and deviates from the original work to address more modern issues, such as feminism, harassment, racism, the treatment of the Indian community in Canada, homosexuality, death and mourning.
Some characters are also invented, while others are more explored, like Gilbert, Diana or Matthew. The two works can therefore be taken separately, but without one spoiling the pleasure of discovering the other. Anne with an Eworn by Amybeth McNulty (Stranger Things), Lucas Jade Zumann, Geraldine James or RH Thompson, can be seen on Netflix. And the novels have recently been republished in their entirety by the Toussaint Louverture publishing house.
