Iconic film from the 70s, Grease has marked generations and generations, and still remains a reference today. In addition to the romance between Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsen, it was also the iconic style of the late Olivia Newton-John that won over the public.
Although Grease dating back decades, the film has continued to influence fashion and celebrities. In 2015, Gigi Hadid dressed up as Sandy, wearing the cult black leather jacket. Many fashion houses have also paid homage to the musical. In 2014, Jean-Paul Gaultier paraded numerous outfits inspired by it for his spring-summer ready-to-wear collection. In 2016, it was Louis Vuitton’s turn to recreate the protagonist’s famous pink leather jacket. And, recently, in 2023, it was Celine who incorporated black leather jackets resembling the one worn by the character Danny.
It was therefore more than obvious that everyone was going to rush to the “A Week of Hollywood Legends” auction, organized by Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies on December 13, 2024. Indeed, it put up for sale Hollywood film memorabilia, including the famous black leather perfecto with red satin lining worn by Olivia Newton-John.
It had already been sold by Julien’s Auctions a few years earlier, in 2019. In fact, the actress had organized a sale dedicated to the film Greaseand offered his legendary jacket. It was then sold for $243,200. But the anonymous buyer returned it to him a month later, explaining that it belonged to him, according to our colleagues at French Vogue.
And now, more than 2 years after her death, she is put up for auction. Estimated at $80,000, according to the organizers of the sale, the perfecto was sold for almost six times that price, or $476,000.
And it’s not the only item of clothing belonging to the actress, who died in 2022, that was sold for a high price. Indeed, the sale included several of her outfits: dresses, t-shirts, coats, jackets. Another motorcycle jacket, with his first name written in rhinestones on the back, was sold for $12,700. In total, according to the organizers, it would have brought in 4.5 million dollars!
