Agroforestry is an agricultural system in which woody crops, such as trees and shrubs, are combined with arable farming or livestock farming. “This combination makes the entire agricultural system more resilient,” explains Isabel Kruisheer of the Utrecht Nature and Environmental Federation (NMU). “Cows are now on a large piece of land, but rarely between trees. Agricultural production has become more intensive and farms focus on one branch. As a result, all extras on the farm have disappeared. There is simply no time for that anymore. The generations of today often no longer know how to plant trees.”
