Eight films and 3 prequels weren’t enough, JK Rowling’s Harry Potter novels are getting a large-scale new edition in series form. While Warner and HBO have already announced that each of the seven books has its own season will get, further details about the plot have so far been sparse.
However, fans of the books can look forward to a deeper acceptance of the material, as Warner Bros. Television Group CEO Channing Dungey has now officially confirmed.
Harry Potter series will be “more detailed” than films
In a new interview with Variety, Dungey spoke about the development process of the Harry Potter series and explained that it’s going quite well:
There’s not much to say at the moment. We have fantastic writers doing what they need to do right now. Casting calls have started in the UK and Ireland, so that process is also underway. It’s going pretty well.
Dungey also revealed that there is a reason for the series that she is particularly happy about as a big fan of the books:
As a huge fan of the books, it’s an incredible dream to have the opportunity to read these to be explored in more detail than a two-hour film can. That’s the only reason we’re taking this path.
With this, Dungey once again officially confirms what has already emerged from the simple fact that each book has its own season: the series should go into much more detail than its cinematic counterpart. Does that mean that Ginny will finally get a personality or will we meet Winky, Neville’s parents and Peeves? That still remains to be seen.
When is the Harry Potter series coming?
In June, it was announced that Francesca Gardiner (Succession) would serve as showrunner and writer for the series. Mark Mylod, who worked with Gardiner on Succession, will direct several episodes.
Filming is currently scheduled to start in April 2025. The first season should then be in the year 2026 in the USA on HBO and its streaming service Max. You can read everything you need to know until then here.
