It doesn’t always have to be monsters and serial killers. The Netflix political thriller Diplomatic Relations does (mostly) without the usual series components of other top ten representatives and still managed to reach second place straight away with its second season. The audience was rewarded with a few transatlantic twists, especially a new one Head of the United States. But What happens after the end of Diplomatic Relations 2?
In this article you will find out:
Warning, spoilers for Diplomatic Relations Season 2 follow.
The Ending Explained: This is what happens in the finale of Diplomatic Relations Season 2
The series begins with a serious diplomatic crisis after a British aircraft carrier is attacked in the Persian Gulf, leaving 41 sailors dead. Who is really behind it remains a mystery that concerns Keri Russell’s diplomat Kate Wyler for the rest of the series. She is appointed US ambassador to Great Britain and at the same time has to prevent escalation.
In season 2, the incident in the Persian Gulf continues to concern Kate. Kate suspects the British Prime Ministerwho is said to have staged the attack. His alleged motive: Because of the attack, the United Kingdom would move closer together and thus prevent an impending Scottish secession. In the middle of season 2, however, the suspicion turns out to be brutally wrong.
Season 2 reveals who was behind the attack on the Courageous
At the same time, we get to know US Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney), whose departure actually seems to be only a matter of time – with Kate as a possible successor. Penn quickly proves to be a clever player and that also demands respect from our diplomat. But then Kate’s husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) gives her a perfidious idea during one of their bedside conversations: What if Penn is behind the attack on the British ship?
In the finale of The Diplomat Season 2, suspicions are confirmed: Vice President Grace Penn ordered the attack on the Courageous. During a confrontation, she also explains the reason to Kate: Scottish independence would have endangered an important naval base in the British Isles from which the USA could counter possible Russian threats in the Atlantic. However, the attack got out of hand and caused more damage than planned.
The twist in the Season 2 finale changes everything
One thing is clear to Kate: she cannot make the story public without destabilizing half of Europe. So she only has one way out: she has to replace the vice president herself. As a next step, she wants to inform her superior, the Foreign Minister, about the truth with the help of Hal.
In the final minutes, however, the Season 2 finale has another surprise in store: Hal, who already sees himself as the Vice President’s husband, does not speak to the Foreign Minister, but to US President Rayburn (Michael McKean) himself. When he finds out about his vice president’s crime, he dies of shock. Grace Penn, the person responsible for the attack, becomes President of the USA.
Season 3 of Diplomatic Relations is safe and there is also a hint about the story
What happens next and who will be vice president of the new US president? Could this be Kate, who also carries the dark secret of the head of the United States with her? Or will she become a target for the most powerful woman on the planet?
Anyone who wants to know what will happen next in diplomatic relations can look forward to this: Season 3 has already been confirmedas reported by Netflix. Showrunner Debora Cahn has already provided a hint as to how Kate’s journey through the transatlantic centers of power will continue:
Season 3 flips the chessboard. Kate experiences the special nightmare that is getting what you want.
This could foreshadow Kate’s promotion to Vice President, if Grace Penn is anything to go by “Keep your friends close, but your enemies even closer” proceeds. But it is not a confirmation.
When is Season 3 of Diplomatic Relations coming to Netflix?
No start date for Season 3 of Diplomatic Relations has been announced yet. While other Netflix series often take breaks of several years between seasons, this is not to be expected with the political thriller. Production of the new episodes has already started. That’s why we expect season 3 to start in Summer or fall 2025.
If you want to pass the time until then, you can do so, for example, with the Danish political thriller Borgen – Dangerous Ropes, which is streaming on Netflix. Or you can turn to the classic of the genre with which Grace actress Allison Janney once became famous: Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing. The story about a fictional US president and his press officer (Janney) consists of seven seasons, which are available to buy and rent online.
