Before Germany’s World Cup opener against Japan, the players showed their displeasure with Fifa by covering their mouths in the team photo.
The match then ended in a shock loss for the Germans – who were subsequently mocked by Qatari journalist Mohamed Al-kaabi.
“This is what happens when you don’t focus on football,” he writes on Twitter.
In the run-up to the World Cup in Qatar, Fifa announced that sporting consequences await those players who choose to wear the captain’s armband with the message “One Love”. The decision has created a lot of anger, not least among the seven nations that planned in advance to use the bandages during the championship.
Germany was mocked
One of these nations is Germany, which, despite not choosing to use the bond, still took a clear position. Before Wednesday’s meeting with Japan, they protested against Fifa by covering their mouths with their hands in the team photo – to show that they felt silenced.

The match that followed was a fiasco for the Germans. Japan pulled off one of the tournament’s biggest upsets to date, winning 2–1, and were mocked by the Qatari journalist after the defeat Mohammed Al-kaabi.

Al-kaabi, who has over 400,000 followers on Twitter, sent out a tweet that included a picture of the German protest with accompanying text that made the message clear:
“This is what happens when you don’t focus on football,” he writes.

The tweet has since been widely circulated, with many being critical of how Al-kaabi expressed himself.
The next group stage match, which is played on Sunday, pits Germany against Spain in what looks set to be a real showdown after the shock loss to Japan.
