It’s the most anticipated fashion event of the year! The 2025 Met Gala date and theme have finally been revealed. Here’s everything we know about the next edition.
Every year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York welcomes all the biggest stars for the fashion event of the year: the MET Gala. Created in 1948 by Eleanor Lambert, this annual gala raises funds for the Costume Institute of the famous New York museum. But it’s also a real fashion spectacle and the opportunity to be dazzled by our favorite stars in extraordinary outfits!
The theme announces the color. This is the most important information since all the biggest celebrities in cinema, music and influence dress accordingly. For this 53rd edition, the title of the exhibition – and therefore the theme – is none other than “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Unveiled last Thursday October 9 by Vogue, this subject was inspired by the book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, written by Professor Monica L. Miller. The event “will take the black dandy as its subject and examine the importance of clothing and style in the formation of black identities in the Atlantic diaspora“, details the American fashion magazine under its Instagram post.
The exhibition thus focuses on the style of clothing imposed on black slaves in the 18th century – a style which played a very important role in the creation of their identity. This subject is all the more important as it takes place a few years after the Black Lives Matter movement. It is also the first time that this event focuses on the African-American community!
It’s also the first time since the 2003 “Men in Skirts” exhibition that the MET Gala has focused exclusively on men’s fashion. For the occasion, the jury, with the exception of Anna Wintour, will be entirely composed of African-American men. Actor and director Colman Domingo, British driver Lewis Hamilton, singer and artistic director Pharrell Williams, rapper Asap Rocky: all have been nominated to be part of it! Basketball player Lebron James, for his part, will be honorary president of the ceremony!
Like every year, the fashion event organized by Anna Wintour will take place on the first Monday of May, i.e. May 5, 2025. As for the museum exhibition, it will be open to the public from May 10 to October 26, 2025.
