With Vessel of Hatred, runes came to Diablo 4, which you can combine to form so-called rune words. There are 3 rarity levels of runes: magical, rare and legendary. Why do I need runes? The rune words allow you to integrate various skills into your builds – some of them skills from other classes. You can also craft other runes with the runes you have collected and even create Mythics in combination with Magnificent Sparks.

Where do I get runes? You get runes of every rarity level as drops from monsters throughout Sanctuary. You can make them at the jeweler from other runes you have collected and you can trade runes with other players.

Diablo 4 Runes: Locations

Although runes can drop from all sorts of activities, according to Blizzard there are guaranteed drops here. It is therefore worth farming the following content if you want to collect runes as quickly as possible:

  • In boss encounters in the Vessel of Hatred campaign: When you start with Vessel of Hatred, you will probably first deal with the campaign. Within the new story you will encounter various bosses that you have to defeat in order to progress. Some of them reward you with runes.
  • Crates from the Whispering Tree: If you complete so-called whispers and collect a total of 10 grisly gifts for the whispering tree, you can exchange them for a chest. In addition to loot, these are now guaranteed to contain runes.
  • Capturing bases: You will now find a total of 18 bases spread across the map that you can take – 3 per area. The game rewards you with runes for conquering a base for the first time.
  • World bosses: World bosses also drop runes as rewards when you defeat them.

    • Where else can I get runes? Aside from the “guaranteed sources,” they can also drop in other endgame content. These include nightmare dungeons and the “tortured” bosses, which you defeat from torment level 1.

    A visit to the nightmare dungeons is generally worth it, because since Season 6 you have been able to get the important crafting material for completing it (masterworking). So the functions of Nightmare Dungeons and the Pit have essentially been swapped. You now level your glyphs in the pit. You can also unlock the new difficulty levels in Diablo 4 there.
