Emma Hayes, who is leaving Chelsea after the season, will become the highest-paid female coach of all time when she starts as head coach of the US national soccer team in the summer.
The expected news came from the soccer fields last week, when the American Football Association announced that it had appointed the new head coach of the women’s national soccer team, British pilot by Emma Hayes. Hayes, who made a successful mark at Chelsea, will start her career at the end of May and, according to media reports, nets 1.6 million dollars annually – more than any female coach ever before.
The merits of Hayes, 47, on England’s pitches are undeniable. With Chelsea, he has celebrated, among other things, six English Super League titles, five FA Cup victories and led his team to the Champions League final. During the 11 years she has spent at Chelsea, she has not only raised the London team to the top of England and the world, but also moved women’s football forward in her home country.
So it’s no wonder that the US Soccer Federation wanted Hayes as their head coach after the summer’s World Cup upset.
In the media, Hayes has been praised not only for his social skills, but also for his ability to shape the game according to the opponents and develop individuals.

– He is a really good guy who really cared a lot about the players and how the players are also off the field. It is really important that the coach is socially skilled and able to talk to the players about other things as well, Engman begins.

One trait that Engman particularly liked about Hayes was directness.
– He was a really demanding coach. He demanded a lot from the players and said really directly if the players weren’t good enough or if they needed to improve. I liked that he said everything very directly.
Engman played for the London team between 2018 and 2020. He suffered from a nasty injury, and the hamstring injury kept the Finnish player out for almost the entire 2019-2020 season. He left Chelsea in the summer of 2020, even though there was still a year left on the contract, and headed to the French Montpellier in search of playing time. Before that, however, he had time to celebrate the English Super League championship with the club.
Recovery underway
Engmann’s road led through Montpellier back to Sweden to Växjö and from there to the ranks of Hammarby. With the Stockholm club, Engman was able to celebrate first the Swedish Cup victory in the summer and recently also the Damallsvenskan championship after 38 years, when Hammarby won the championship with a one-goal goal difference.

Engman had to watch the events of the rest of the season from the sidelines, because he injured his ankle.
– My ankle dislocated and broke and it was operated on at the beginning of September. For six weeks I had an orthosis and walked with canes, but now the rehabilitation has started well. I just got to take my first running steps, which is nice, but there’s still a long way to go. In January, I would like to be able to train with the team, Engman talked.
Engman’s contract with the Stockholm club expired at the end of the season. However, Engman has enjoyed himself in Stockholm.
– I have told them that I would like to stay, but we haven’t really talked yet.
The Finnish women’s national football team will play in the Nations League on Thursday, November 30, against Romania. Chelsea will face Paris FC in the second round of the Champions League group stage on Thursday 23 November at 22:00.
