Michael Keaton, Christian Bale and most recently Robert Pattinson shaped our image of Batman on the big screen. On television, Kevin Conroy lent his voice to the dark avenger for the animated Batman series. And that same animated version spawned an often-forgotten sequel that shows us Batman as he is still missing on the big screen: Batman of the Future.
Yves explains what makes Batman of the Future so brilliant in his video here:
We need this Batman movie!
Kevin Conroy also voiced the aged Batman in the sequel to the popular 90s animated series and Mark Hamill also returned as the Joker.
What is Batman of the Future about?
In Batman of the Future (originally: Batman Beyond), time has caught up with the protector of Gotham City. Bruce Wayne is too old to spend all night fighting crime and has to resign from office. Taking his place is young Terry McGinnis. Through his conflict between his nightly superhero life and his day-to-day private life video editor Yves draws parallels to Spider-Man. Even the friendly neighborhood spider always drew its core drama from the contrast between Spider-Man and Peter Parker.
Is there a Batman of the Future movie coming?
Just a few weeks ago, a member of the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse animation team shared concept art on X “Beyond”film that gave fans hope. According to their own statements, the idea had already been pitched to the studio behind the successful Spider-Verse films, but Warner immediately dampened expectations.
In the new DC strategy under James Gunn is so far no project in this direction is planned. However, a Batman of the Future film could still potentially be accommodated under the new “Elseworlds” banner, which now allows the DC Universe to have stories outside of a unified universe.
