Ahead of this year’s football European Championship, England was singled out as one of the big gold favorites. Rightfully so, the national team captain Gareth Southgate possesses a fantastic squad of quite a few star players.
The new disappointment
But so far the English have not impressed at all and have received a lot of criticism. On Tuesday evening, another disappointment came to play when they only managed to score 0-0 against Slovenia.

It was enough for England to win the group, go unbeaten in all three games and now qualify for the play-offs. But it is still not enough to silence the doubters and critics.
England is sawn
At the final whistle, the players were booed off by the English supporters in place. And after the match, the criticism has continued to be loud.
“This is so lousy. It’s like watching Arsenal in slow motion. Where is the energy, the urgency and the flow? World-class players who move like snails,” writes the TV profile and also the Arsenal supporter Piers Morgan on X.
“Slovenia are well worth the points. England have finally found some consistency – consistently woeful,” writes The Athletics James Pearce on X.

Many English football pundits have so much higher expectations for this edition of England. And is now seriously looking at how the national team will fare in the rest of the tournament.
– There aren’t really any practice patterns. We look really simple and it’s sad because I think we’re better than that. The players out there are better than that and even the players on the bench are better than that, says the TV expert Gary Neville in ITV.
“If England cannot be inspired by this phenomenal support, something is seriously wrong. It’s a deafening sound,” writes the respected football journalist Henry Winter on X.

The clear criticism has of course reached the English national team and now they are forced to defend themselves after the weak effort against Slovenia.
– We don’t really get that last one in front of the goal. I think the players who came in did well. I understand the reactions, but it’s tough conditions, says national team captain Southgate to ITV.
– We tried to win the match with the changes we made. We put offensive players on the field.
