This is not how you should store your ketchup – the mistake many people make

This is not how you should store your ketchup

June 5 is International Ketchup Day, a day to celebrate ketchup and its history.

That’s where the word “ketchup” comes from

From the beginning, the word ketchup comes from the Chinese word “kê-tsiap”, which is a Chinese sauce with, among other things, fermented fish, writes National Geographic.

In conjunction with ketchup day, Heinz has conducted a survey to find out if Swedes actually know how to store opened ketchup bottles.

The result of the survey was quite shocking, as it turned out that several who took part in the survey did not know where to store an opened ketchup bottle, which the magazine Café also wrote about.

Malmö residents know best how ketchup should be stored

Almost everyone who took part in the survey and was between 45 and 54 knew how an opened ketchup bottle should be stored.

The survey also showed that people living in Malmö had a better understanding of how to store their ketchup compared to people from Gothenburg. In Malmö, 95 percent knew how to store an opened ketchup bottle, while only 91 percent of Gothenburgers knew.

In Stockholm, most people were out cycling and only 89 percent of test participants knew where an opened ketchup bottle should be kept.

How to store your opened ketchup bottle

So where should an opened ketchup bottle really be kept? It answers Sophie Zeffer from Heinz on.

“Unopened, Heinz tomato ketchup keeps well in the pantry because it has a natural acidity and many of the ingredients act as natural preservatives. But once the ketchup has been opened, the taste can be affected by how it is stored – storing the ketchup in the fridge is therefore the best way to keep the good taste,” she says, which also Café magazine wrote about.

So storing your ketchup bottle in the pantry, as many do, is therefore completely wrong.
