Two years after his ecstatic screen comeback with Elvis, director Baz Luhrmann announces his next project. Once again he is filming the life of a well-known personalitythat has found its place in the history books. This time, however, we are jumping back a bit further in the past.
Luhrmann’s next film is about the Life of Joan of Arcwho is also known in this country as Joan of Arc and Maid of Orleans. Joan of Arc was a French resistance fighter in the Hundred Years’ War, which was fought between England and France in the 15th century.
Baz Luhrmann is shooting a new Joan of Arc film – and Jenna Ortega has probably already signed up for the casting
As Deadline reports, the Casting process started. We are looking for an actress for “the ultimate teenage coming-of-age story set during the Hundred Years’ War”. No specific names have been linked to the project yet. However, there is already a secret applicant.
Wednesday star Jenna Ortega, who can currently be seen in the fantasy sequel Beetlejuice, recently revealed in an interview with Letterboxd that Joanne d’Arc her absolute dream role would be. In the same breath, she names the film adaptation The Passion of the Maid of Orleans as one of her four favorite films.
Ortega has not been officially linked to the Joan of Arc film to date. It is also unclear whether Luhrmann is looking for a established star or a newcomer for the title role. With Austin Butler as Elvis, he recently cast someone who was well known but only became a big name through the role.
Joan of Arc is a tragic and inspiring story: films have been made about her for over 100 years
The story of Joan of Arc is certainly perfect for giving an actress the biggest showcase of her career At the age of 17, Joan of Arc joined the French resistance following divine inspiration and was later burned at the stake for heresy.
Joan of Arc is both a story of heroine and suffering and has proven to be a popular and versatile canvas for over 100 years. 15 film adaptations have been released so far, from prestigious historical films to action blockbusters to coming-of-age musicals, everything is there.
All Joan of Arc films at a glance:
There are some iconic works that have shaped the course of film history through their strong imagery Now we can look forward to seeing how Luhrmann interprets Joan of Arc. Based on films such as William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge, we can expect anything but a conventional biopic.
One thing will definitely be different: Deadline will list Luhrmann’s film under Jehanne d’Arc – or simply Jehanne. It is unclear whether this is the final title of the film. It could just as well be a provisional working title But the statement is clear: This will not be the Joan of Arc film you are expecting.
When will Baz Luhrmann’s Joan of Arc film be released in cinemas?
The new Joan of Arc film has not yet been released in theaters. Depending on how quickly the casting process goes, filming could begin in the next few months, making the film ready for a premiere in the Festival season 2026 would be ready. However, so far no timing has been announced by Warner Bros.
