So on the first day of the new year, many people are probably thinking about what they want out of life. Perhaps one hopes for a happier year. But is it possible to control yourself? To some extent, you can actually do that, says psychologist Siri Helle in Nyhetsmorgon.
Happiness is about feeling good in the moment. It can be a strong feeling of joy, but also something more quiet and subtle, says Siri Helle.
She emphasizes that our happiness levels are controlled by our genes. Some are born happy salmon who always see the glass as half full. Others, the vast majority of us, need to work a little more on being happy more often.
You can’t just decide to feel happiness, but you can create the right conditions and notice that the feeling comes a little more often, says Siri Helle.
This is how you can define happiness
Sweden is a unique society in many ways. Secular, individualistic and commercial. The image of happiness is often connected with the right gadgets, many followers on social media and a surface you can display and sell.
In our culture, it is very much about achieving things. Buy that car, get that dream job, find a partner. But research shows that happiness is more about the little things you do in everyday life.
Siri Helle explains that it is possible to train yourself to be happier.
You cannot live happily ever after. It’s about doing many small things that give a happiness boost, says Siri Helle.
Define happiness as a feeling – something that is transient. Then you quickly see that it is not as smart to invest in something big and expensive as in many small things.
Something beautiful, a soap that smells good, buns for coffee. Something that adds a golden edge to everyday life.
