This is how you should think about choosing a bag – when the tax disappears

The goal according to the EU is that each person should consume no more than 40 plastic bags per year in 2025. Today, that figure is an average of 17 bags per person in Sweden.

When the treasure disappears. the plastic bag is estimated to be about three kroner cheaper.

Joakim Brodahl, head of collaborations and sales at the organization Keep Sweden clean, is concerned that the consumption of plastic bags will increase.

– The tax has been incredibly effective, we buy fewer bags, he says.

The question of which bag the consumer should choose in the store is complex, says Joakim Brodah.

– We think you should choose the bag you already have at home, but when it comes to littering, plastic is always worse than paper.

– What is important to take with you is that plastic has many unpleasant properties if it ends up in nature and the sea, he says.

As little plastic as possible for household waste

When it comes to household waste, Joakim Brodahl recommends using a bag made from recycled plastic.

– As little plastic as possible and as thin bags as possible. It doesn’t have to live that long.

Today, there are several plastic bags with different types of markings that signal that the plastic bag is more environmentally friendly.

– There may be positive features, such as not using fossil raw materials to manufacture the bag. But if it ends up in the sea, it doesn’t matter, says Joakim Brodahl.

If you need to buy a bag, Joakim Brodahl also advises thinking about how the bag can be reused in the future.
