Exercise improves life in many ways, but it comes with some risks – especially when it’s hot.
Almost two weeks ago died a 21-year-old man after the Gothenburg lap, but according to chief physician Mikael Sandström, you shouldn’t be afraid to train.
– The young people who have cardiac arrest and collapse at the marathon almost always have an undetected heart disease, he says in Nyhetsmorgon.
At the Gothenburg Raceway, 40 people collapsed in the heat and a 21-year-old man died in hospital after suffering cardiac arrest during the competition.
“Doctor Mikael” does not know the specific case but says that it should not deter people from exercising in the heat.
– Anyone can suffer from heatstroke, but those under 35 who have a cardiac arrest have congenital heart disease, he says.
Most dangerous with heat stroke
Heat stroke is significantly more common, especially during races in the heat. It leads to dizziness, lower blood pressure, cramps and salt losses that make the heart pump less well.
But none of the heat stroke patients have a cardiac arrest, says Mikael Sandström.
– The most dangerous thing about heat stroke is that you get cramps and fall and hit yourself.
This is how you protect yourself
Heat stroke is simply caused by the body becoming too hot and not being able to regulate the temperature on its own. It is therefore important to drink water and try to cool down as much as possible.
If you still suffer from heat stroke, the solution is to take a cold shower or lie down in the shade.
– It’s the same if you need help from the healthcare system in case of heat stroke. You can lie in the shade under a fan. In rare cases, you get drops of salt, says Mikael Sandström.
Prolongs life
Doctor Mikael says that one must not forget the benefit of exercising just because there are risks associated with it.
Exercise provides increased quality of life, better memory, steadier mood, lower blood pressure, better immune system, sleep and concentration, he says.
– Every hour trained extends life by two.
