This is how you know if you will get money back for the commuter train delays

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Have you been late to work, if at all, because of the delays in municipal transport during the snow chaos? Do not despair! It may actually happen that you get a penny for the trouble.

But there are some conditions that apply for you to get money back.

Can I get a refund for delays?

SL has something called delay compensation. It applies to all SL traffic in Stockholm County and extends to the commuter trains that cross the county borders to Gnesta, Bålsta and Uppsala.

The compensation applies to up to SEK 1,315, if you were forced to take a taxi, your own car, SJ or another transport company the same distance as SL would have done. It is important to remember that the compensation only applies if you were 20 minutes late, and will not be higher if you are traveling with someone.

Depending on how late you are, and if you have not requested compensation for alternative travel, you can get back part or all of the ticket price.

How do I get money back from SL?

On the website, you can simply fill in a web form, whereupon SL makes an assessment of your compensation claims. You can also call or chat with the company.

Remember that it must not be longer than three months before you advertise the trip in order to receive compensation, but you can submit the compensation claim a full three years after the trip has been advertised.

For the fastest processing, you should send in receipts or replacement tickets immediately after you have been in contact with SL and received a case number, which you will receive when you speak to customer service. Your receipts must then be labeled with the case number.

If for some reason you would rather send a regular letter to SL, you must include the following information:

  • Name, address and social security number.
  • Information about the delayed journey, and why you want compensation.
  • Details of which type of ticket you use and the number of your SL card if you used a travel account or period ticket. If you have used a paper ticket or a single-use card, send them along in the original.
  • If you have traveled by taxi, you send the original taxi receipt.
  • Information if you want a price reduction or compensation for another trip.
  • Your account number where you want the compensation to be paid.
  • Finally, if you are dissatisfied with the assessment made by SL, there are opportunities to request a reconsideration. This reconsideration must be done within three weeks, calculated from the date stated in the rejection.
