After inflation, it doesn’t exactly get easier to stick to a tight budget. The Swedish Consumer Agency has calculated a budget for those living on a pensioner’s budget. Despite housing allowance, that economy can be difficult to get together.

Food is 11 percent more expensive in 2024
If you’re lucky, there may be many grocery stores nearby where you can compare prices. But food has risen in price since last year when the Consumer Agency calculated a sum of SEK 3,000 for food every month. This year, food is 11 percent more expensive.
The big pension change: So you can get SEK 500 more a month – for life
For younger people aged 18-30, food costs are estimated to be close to SEK 4,000 per month. For pensioners, the Swedish Consumer Agency recommends that SEK 3,330 of the budget go to food.

Individual and joint costs
Individual costs such as clothing, leisure time, mobile phone and hygiene products are estimated to cost SEK 2,100 a month for the pensioner. The same figure for the household’s common costs is estimated to be around SEK 9,000. This includes home insurance, water, home equipment, joint mobile subscriptions and household electricity.
And the sum? It ends up at around SEK 14,430.
