This is how wolves dig a tunnel in deep snow

The wolf researcher points out that animals do not always make the best possible choices.

Last week, a rare sight was captured on a video shot by a Chinese shepherd: a pack of wolves is closing in and advancing by digging a tunnel.

Why on earth do animals move in a way that consumes enormous amounts of energy?

A research professor at the Natural Resources Center who is familiar with wolves Ilpo Kojola says that the herd certainly knows its environment.

– Wolves are territorial animals and know how to move in the terrain of their habitat. They try to avoid unnecessary energy consumption, but as animals, they are not always able to make optimal solutions.

The wolves could be surprised by the thick kinos. In the area in question in the Altay prefecture in the northwestern part of China, a lot of snow has fallen recently, which has made it difficult for the animals to find food.

According to Kojola, wolves do not attack similar farms in Finland.

The video shows how the big and strong individuals advance first. They are followed by a group of smaller and younger wolves, with the leader of the pack watching from behind.

Every now and then the wolves peek out from the middle of the snow and look around.

– Being busy is undoubtedly exhausting. The wolves’ decisions are certainly influenced by factors related to predation and safety, says Kojola.

Susilauma’s procurement trip was previously covered by, among other things Helsingin sanomat newspaper.
