This is how to know if a psychologist is right

As with all relationships, sometimes it doesn’t work out.

We all feel unwell sometimes. The question of mental health is an issue taken more and more seriously by the French, with 78% of those questioned considering that it is as important as physical health according to theIpsos. Psychological suffering can go so far as to hinder an individual in their daily life and lead to the appearance of various disorders, anxiety and sadness that are more or less invasive. Consulting a psychotherapist can help overcome discomfort: “Often, people come to see someone because they feel overwhelmed, exhausted or unable to mobilize their resources. They have difficulty setting their limits and feel overwhelmed. Therapy helps them find a balance”tells us psychologist Laure Fillette. But we often fear not finding the “right” psychologist to understand us…

The goal of therapy is to provide tools to the patient so that they can understand things about themselves and decipher their own functioning. Therapy also allows you to regain self-confidence and autonomy in order to learn or relearn how to resolve your problems alone. But as in all human relationships, sometimes things don’t stick. “Sometimes all the ingredients are there in theory for therapy to work, but in practice it doesn’t work.” confirms the psychologist.

To know if a therapist is right for you or not, you have to trust their feelings. “There must be good understanding with the psychologistaccording to Laure Fillette. If you don’t feel comfortable with your therapist, if you don’t feel heard or understood, it’s not working. In this case, we can try to talk about it in consultation. And if things don’t improve, it’s not always necessary to persist: you can find another therapist.” Other parameters can confirm this feeling, in particular the fact of feeling the therapy as something painful, boring or not perceiving any improvement in one’s condition.

Finally, “you must feel welcomed and feel that the therapist is sufficiently available, attentive and efficient.” It is not because a therapist does not suit us that we should change our ideas about therapy and abandon the project of starting work on ourselves. There are many therapists, each with their own approach, who can match your needs. The key is finding the right one and this may take several tries. “By finding the right person, we have already done 80% of the work”concludes Laure Fillette.
