Germany won the World Cup in 2014. Since then, it has twice missed the first round of the World Cup.
The German men’s national football team crashed out of the World Cup tournament for the second time in a row. Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2 in the last round of the preliminary group, but it wasn’t enough when Japan surprised Spain 2-1 at the same time.
Japan sensationally won the whole group, and Spain took the second place. Germany was left behind because of its lower goal difference.
Relegation was taken hard in Germany, which is known as the perennial winner of the prestigious championships and one of the world’s football powers.
– How embarrassing! We are outside, headlined by Bild magazine (you will switch to another service).
– For the second time in a row, Germany made a complete fool of itself at the World Cup, wrote on his behalf Sportschau (you switch to another service).
Germany head coach Hansi Flick described the team’s feelings as “very disappointed” at the post-match press conference. He doesn’t, though
– I don’t care about other teams. It’s all up to us. If you look at the results, this is our fault, Flick said.
Flick’s status was raised in the German media after the struggle. National team boss Oliver Bierhoff commented on the head coach issue for the German channel Magenta.
– I haven’t thought about it (Flick’s possible resignation) yet. We will sit down with the decision makers in the coming weeks and discuss. I’m not worried about that, Bierhoff acknowledged.
Konkar striker Thomas Müller said he felt bitter. The 33-year-old world champion hinted that his career in the national team could be over.
– I don’t know how to continue this. If this was my last match, I want to say a few words to the German football fans. This has been a huge pleasure. We’ve had some great times. I tried to leave everything on the field in every match, Müller said according to Bild.
In the end, Germany’s fate in the tournament was a 1–2 loss to Japan in the opening match. The playoffs slipped away despite managing to draw with Spain and beat Costa Rica.
– We can only blame ourselves if we concede two goals against Japan in the quarter, having scored twice against Costa Rica Kai Havertz snarled to Bild.
Germany won the world championship in 2014. Since then, however, the games have gone under the bench. Four years ago, it remained a jumbo in its initial group after losing to South Korea and Mexico.
Group winner Japan will face Croatia in the quarterfinals. Spain will take on Morocco, who won their group.
Like Germany, Belgium, which was one of the favorites for the Games, was disappointed when it fell behind Morocco and Croatia.
