Now Swedish hockey will pay tribute to the icon with a unique gesture.
– We had already planned to make round 21 for the Börje tribute. But now we’re rethinking a bit, says Johanna Alba, head of communications at SHL, to Sportbladet.

The entire hockey world has united in great sadness for the unique and so loved Börje Salming. Tributes and condolences to the late icon have poured in over the last 24 hours, and now Swedish hockey is also taking action.

Tributes Salming

The leagues SHL, HockeyAllsvenskan and SDHL had already prepared to pay tribute to Salming in the 21st round, now they have decided to plan again. To make round 21 the most worthy tribute to Börje and a decisive contribution to ALS research.

On Thursday evening, all SHL arenas had a minute’s silence for Salming. Tonight, HockeyAllsvenskan will also observe a few minutes of silence in honor of the Tre Kronor legend.

SEK 1,000 for goals

Then the leagues will gather strength for round 21.
– Yes, we twist it a bit. The teams will play in mourning bands during the weekend and tribute ceremony with applause at Saturday’s games. It is not only the SHL that is behind this, but it is a collaboration between the SHL, Hockeyallsvenskan and SDHL, says Johanna Albacommunications manager at SHL, to Sportbladet.

The leagues have also decided to donate one thousand kroner for every goal scored during the weekend to the organization Börje Salming ALS Foundation. Players and referees will also wear stickers with the number 21 on their helmets to honor the late icon.

Finally, the leagues will use specially made pucks with the text “Börje Salming ALS-stiftelse” on them. The pucks will then be auctioned off after the games.
