The West is pivoting away from providing only defensive weapons to Ukraine.

More and more countries are now also pledging to send offensive weapons systems, such as tanks, that can help the Ukrainians fight back and retake lost territory and push back Russian forces.

The question is how the new weapons systems can change the outcome of the war.

– The battlefield has surprised us many times during this conflict so it is difficult to predict. But I would still say that the main initiative now lies with Ukraine, says Magnus Christiansson, lecturer in military science.

On Friday this week, the so-called Rammstein group will meet and then a collective announcement is expected about how comprehensive the new, more offensive weapons package will be for a needy Ukraine.
