SMHI tightens weather warning • The meteorologist’s call • “Be prepared for queues and delays”
Now winter is coming in earnest.
During Wednesday, there will be snow and in some places more than 50 centimetres.
– If you have to go out, you should be out in good time and not stress, says TV4’s meteorologist Leon Lee.
During Wednesday and Thursday, there may be a lot of snow. During Tuesday, SMHI issued several yellow warnings and during the evening the warning for one of the areas was increased to orange which, among other things, means that there may be problems in traffic. The orange warning applies to coastal areas from Gävle up to Hudiksvall between November 20 at 8 p.m. – November 21 at 9 a.m. and there may be half a meter of snow.
“Don’t go out into traffic unnecessarily or prepare yourself for the possibility of standing still. Traffic conditions can be difficult due to drifts, slippage, poor visibility and snow,” SMHI writes on its website.
This is where it comes in
There are mainly two areas where the snowpack moves in across the country.
– The first area applies to the west and south-west of Vänern as snow flurries form over Vänern’s relatively warm waters and blow over land with the wind. The second area is a stretch from Medelpad south along the southern Norrland coast to and including eastern Svealand. Here, too, you are affected by snow flurries that form in the same way, but with added moisture from the Gulf of Bothnia and the Bothnian Sea, says TV4’s meteorologist Leon Lee.
How much can it come?
– About 5-10 centimeters in the landscape around Lake Vänern. In eastern Svealand it may fall around 5-15 centimeters and along the southern Norrland coast around 15-30 centimeters, locally more than 50 centimeters in Gävleborg. It is important to bear in mind that there will be large local variations in both areas. If it is snowing lightly when you head out with the car, you should be prepared that it may get heavier along the way. Do not rely on the point forecasts of the weather apps, but follow the forecast details given by the Swedish meteorologists.
Warnings: Be out in good time
Snow has already started to blow in west of Lake Vänern on Tuesday evening, and it is also expected to continue to be cold in Sweden in the coming days. Snow may continue to fall well into Thursday as well.
– Since it is the first real snowstorm of the season, I can imagine that there will be those who haven’t had time to change to winter tires yet. If you have to go out, you should be out in good time and not stress. Adjust speed and distance and be prepared for queues and longer travel times caused by slips and accidents. Those who travel by public transport should update themselves about delays and canceled departures, says Leon Lee.
