This is how the next places in the World Cup football are decided – EPN’s expert names three clear champion candidates and one wild card

This is how the next places in the World Cup

The last preliminary round of the World Cup is ahead. Brazil, France and Portugal have already secured their place in the top 16 for the playoffs.

So most of the places are still open. Only in Canada and the host country Qatar will the World Championships end with a hundred certainty in the initial group stage.

Sports expert Jonne Kunna Brazil has convinced the most so far. The team, which was already among the biggest champion favorites of the games, has won clear victories over Serbia and Switzerland.

– The structure of Brazil’s ball play has been excellent. Sure, Brazil could be more efficient in their goal positions, but they have been efficient enough. The game has been held. The opponent cannot reach the goal posts. The assembly is also of high quality. The exchange brings top players onto the field and benefits from it, Kunnas states.

The expert has not personally liked France’s way of playing, but still the reigning world champion is also among the teams that have convinced themselves in the World Cup so far.

– The current team is much the same as it was four years ago. France is playing efficiently. France defends in a block and it has been mercilessly effective in counterattacks, Kunnas sums up.

The most difficult situation in terms of further places is perhaps in the E block. Spain, Costa Rica, Japan and Germany are all still open.

According to the expert, however, two convincing candidates for success have been found in the block: Spain and Germany.

The teams met on Sunday and shared the points 1–1 in a good match.

– Spain has convinced comprehensively with its high press and attacking structure. The Germany game was a tough test, but it looks like Spain can go far. Spain’s lineup is not as strong as Brazil’s. However, playing as a team looks like Spain can go all the way. The attacker is a question mark, Kunnas states.

Kunnas brings out Germany as a wild card, even though there was a loss to Japan in the opening game and the next place is still not at all certain with one tie point.

– Germany can fight for a medal if there is development and everything falls into place. However, Germany’s game showed good signs of attacking and pressing, Kunnas estimates.

The biggest disappointment of the tournament is Kunnas lifting Argentina. Lionel Messi probably has the last chance of his career to win the world championship, but in the opening match there was a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia. In the second game, there was another narrow victory over Mexico.

– Of course, everything is still possible, but the structure of Argentina’s attack is not convincing at all. Playing is forcing. Longer attacks are tricky. Because of that, creating scoring positions is also difficult, Kunnas states.

Another disappointment for the expert has been the only Nordic country of the Games, Denmark. The Jews drew with Tunisia and lost to France. In the final game of the initial group stage, they will face Australia.

– I expected more from Denmark than I have seen. Playing has been slower than I thought. There are success factors in defense, but the quality of the upper floor doesn’t seem to be enough to go far, Kunnas states.
