This is how the conflict between Israel and Iran can develop: “Like Pandora’s Box”

On Monday evening, Israel announced that it will respond to Iran’s attack. The statement came after the Israeli War Cabinet met again during the day.

Bitte Hammargren, Middle East analysts see several risks and different developments in the tense situation.

War between Israel and Hamas

  • This is how Sweden’s trade with Israel regarding military equipment looks

  • SVT’s foreign reporter: “Could lead to a major war”

  • – It’s like a Pandora’s box. We don’t know what might come out of it if it is opened. But the front between Israel and Lebanon is the potentially really big source of conflict because it is a border between the countries.

Hezbollah has missiles that can reach Israeli cities and Israel can “lay a carpet bomb” over Lebanon and knock out the electricity supply, says Bitte Hammargren.

    – It is a war risk that will potentially affect civilians on both sides.

“Depends on how forcefully Israel responds”

If there is a major war in the region, it would mean that the United States risks being drawn into the conflict. That would be the worst risk, according to Jan Hallenberg, associate senior researcher at the Foreign Policy Institute.

It depends on how powerful Israel’s response to Iran will be and whether they strike on Iranian territory or not, he says.

    – If Iran strikes back very forcefully, then the Americans will eventually, I think, go from helping Israel defend itself to attacking Iran, he says and continues:

    – There are already forces within the United States that want to attack Iran. I think that is the worst risk – the big risk of a regional war.
