– SMHI has 700 measuring stations across the country that measure rainfall in patches of approximately 20 centimeters in diameter. That’s about 14 square meters, and that’s nothing on the surface of the entire country. A lot can happen between the measuring stations, says Berit Arheimer, professor of hydrology.
More observations are required
In order to bring in more comprehensive weather observations, researchers at SMHI now want those who have private weather stations to share observation data.
In the video you will hear more about what the researchers want to achieve.
– We want to see how the rain passes, how big they get and so on.
100,000 weather stations wanted
To some extent, private data is already used in research.
– But we hope to get it into production as soon as possible.
How many stations would you like to have?
– We would like to have a hundred thousand. Today we have ten or fifteen thousand.
Handling such large amounts of information should not be a problem as it is taken care of by artificial intelligence (AI).
