They call it “Folkhemsel” and the proposal involves the state buying up a large proportion of the electricity that households are expected to consume, and then auctioning it off on long contracts to electricity companies that want to sell the electricity the cheapest.
According to the Social Democrats, this could result in an electricity price of 40 öre per kilowatt hour. Lower than what many electricity companies offer their customers right now. They also believe that the long-term perspective combined with the state’s credibility will lead to more players daring to invest in new electricity production.
What are the chances of the government adopting this proposal?
– It is a really good proposal. We have a full scale war of invasion in Europe. It affects the entire European electricity market and then you have to have the strength and courage to think new, says Magdalena Andersson.
