In the bathroom there are several different bacteria traps. Thoughts may wander to the toilet more specifically, but even towels are grateful breeding grounds for bacteria – if you don’t know how to clean them.

In summer, many people also bring their beach towels outside when they are staying by a lake or the sea. Then it can be extra important to clean the towel before leaving it out at home.

Bacteria traps during the summer

News24 have previously written about various bacterial traps to watch out for during the summer. One of these is legionella bacteria, which can be found in water and potting soil. These bacteria are not dangerous for everyone, but can cause pneumonia for certain groups such as the elderly, which in turn may need to be treated in hospital.

Regarding towels, says the cleaning expert Marlene Eriksson in an interview with Aftonbladet Livsstil that the vast majority of people wash their towels far too rarely.

One way to find out if a towel needs washing is by smelling it – if it smells sour, it’s definitely ready for the washing machine. Once in the washing machine, she recommends washing the towels at 90 degrees.

But how often should you wash bath towels? Yes, it depends.

In an interview, Eriksson says that the vast majority of people need to change their towels every five days.

– If you shower several times a day so that the towel does not have time to dry properly, you may have to replace it even more often, she says in the interview with Lifestyle.
