This is how much household costs are estimated to be

Next year, the Swedish Consumer Agency expects that household costs will basically remain the same compared to this year.

It’s a trend breaker. The forecasts, which the authority draws up on behalf of the government, generally count on rising expenses every year. The year after the war in Ukraine broke out, they increased sharply as inflation ran rampant.

— There have been substantial increases in many areas in recent years. We no longer see that, says Kristina Difsinvestigator at the Swedish Consumer Agency.

The cost expected to increase

The costs for, among other things, personal hygiene, furniture and housewares are expected to fall. Likewise the electricity prices.

“Then you don’t know if it will be extremely cold and if a nuclear power plant goes on strike,” says Difs.

Expenditures for water and sewage and home insurance are, however, expected to increase. When it comes to food, expenses are expected to be basically the same.

The Swedish Consumer Agency’s forecast calculates approximately 40 percent of household costs and is based on what is needed to live “a good everyday life”. Large items such as housing and transport are not included.

Individual differences

The household forecast is used, among other things, by the government as part of the basis for developing a national standard for subsistence allowance. It is also used by many banks as part of their “remaining to live on” mortgage loan calculations.

Kristina Difs emphasizes that these are estimated values, and that the costs of food, for example, look different for different households.

— We start from normal prices on a four-week food voucher that we have developed together with the Swedish Food Agency. If you are good at buying at discounts, you can reduce costs, she says.
