This is how Linn Svahn can write Swedish sports history and snuff out Jessie Diggins’ overall victory in the World Cup: “If it’s going to work…”

Linn Svahn can write Swedish sports history this weekend.
By becoming the first female skier in Sweden to win the overall World Cup.
But then she has to get past American Jessie Diggins first.

The American Jessie Diggins has long been the favorite to win the overall World Cup this year. After winning the Tour de Ski last winter, she took a firm hold on first place and hasn’t let it go since.

Svahn very close

But now it is very close for sovereigns Lynn Svahn to catch up. The Swede had not won a World Cup race for 1,000 days before doing so at the Tour de Ski and has since lined up victories in the lead-up to 2024.

Especially in the sprint, Svahn has been masterfully good and on Tuesday she secured the overall victory in the sprint cup with a second place in Drammen. Now the world cup season ends at home in Falun and then there is a realistic chance for Linn to write Swedish sports history.

Linn becomes historic

No Swedish female skier has ever won the overall World Cup and Linn Svahn is just 102 points behind overall leader Jessie Diggins with just three races remaining.

There are still plenty of points left to compete for and a win adds 100 points to the overall standings. On Friday there is another sprint race and then two distance races await this weekend.
– It is important that there are many riders between Linn and Diggins if it is to be possible to collect those points. It is the case that you now get points both in the final result in the sprints but also the qualifying result in the sprints gives points and Linn has been very good there, says the ski expert Anders Blomquist to SVT.

Svahn is of course the big favorite in the sprint, but then the two distance races will be absolutely decisive for who stands as the overall winner on Sunday when the international ski season comes to an end.
– In the two final races, it is an individual classic race and a mass start in freestyle, where Diggins has an advantage on paper, says “Blomman” to the TV channel.
