The closing weekend of the World Biathlon World Cup was exceptionally revisited.
Originally Kaisa Mäkäräinen won the overall competition at Holmenkollen eight years ago. In December, however, completed the Russian Olga Zaitsevan doping investigation for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Zaitseva’s results were annulled eight years ago, so Norway Tora Berger rose past Mäkäräinen to number one in the overall competition.
The International Biathlon Association IBU later decided that Mäkäräinen and Berger would share the victory in the overall competition. For eight-time world champion Berger, the overall cup win was second. The first was through the previous period, from 2012 to 2013.
Berger’s rise past Mäkäräinen explained that after the cancellations of Zaitseva, Berger received 11 extra points in 9 races. Mäkäräinen only got two extra points. Berger’s rankings and Total Points improved considerably more with Zaitseva than he did with Mäkäräinen, who had already left Zaitseva more often than Berger.
In the situation, Mäkäräinen was a bystander of Russia’s state-run doping program, which has spanned many sports.
– If the sport were clean and if we only had clean athletes here, there would be no need to rewrite the results. This is just a sad example of the fact that completely clean and innocent athletes have to suffer from other gossip, Mäkäräinen said fresh in December.
The duo visited Holmenkollen on the highest podium on Friday and received applause from the Oslo audience. Holmenkollen also shouted Tora shouts. The crystal ball given to Holmenkollen went into Berger’s possession.
– Of course, a crystal ball can still be found in Mäkäräinen’s own locker, ‘s narrator Johannes Oikarinen clarified the situation.
On top of all that, Friday was Berger’s birthday. Berger, who ended his career in the spring of 2014, turned 41 today. Mäkäräinen is just over two years younger.
Mäkäräinen won the overall World Cup three times in his career.
On Friday at Holmenkollen, the winner of the women’s sprint took place in front of a home crowd Tiril Eckhoff. She rose to share in the victories the Norwegian women’s all-time top spot with Berger. Each has 28 first places.
The top name in this season’s World Cup Marte Ölsbu Röiseland was third. Röiseland is very close to winning the overall cup with two races left. Röiseland’s worst threatener, Elvira Öberg from Sweden, was only 17th on Friday.
