This is how Costello Hautamaki got the spark for Ilves

follows the SM league finals moment by moment on its website. The Hockey Tour broadcasts every league final live. All finals will be heard live in Areena. The preliminary studios of the ice hockey round can be enjoyed in video form for the first time in the finals.

KANGASALA. Musician Costello Tomb is nowadays more of a motorist than a car driver. However, he didn’t have the moped from the Vehoniemi Auto Museum in his youth.

– These cost so much even then. If you went to ask your father for money, you couldn’t ask for an electric guitar and a moped at the same time, says Hautamäki.

However, at the age of 24, Hautamäki got a driver’s license and bought a motorcycle. At Hautamäki’s suggestion, we arranged an interview at the car museum, because according to him, it is a coffee place for motorcyclists.

– A lot has been done, especially in recent years. There are a few thousand kilsa a year. If you go to Europe, it’s almost ten thousand immediately, Hautamäki chats.

Hautamäki, who plays in Popeda, has an interesting relationship with Tampere SM league teams. He has made Ilves’ goal song We are the Kings, but Popeda has the song Mää and Tappara’s man.

I have to ask, is Costello Hautamäki Tappara’s or Ilves’ men?

– I’m such a young rebel that the main thing is that hockey in Tampere is successful.

Hautamäki made a goal song for Ilves

Hautamäki originally composed Ilves’ goal song in the late 1980s. At first, the song was only supposed to be a short radio commercial of about 20 seconds.

– Then it began to live its own story and suddenly it became the goal song. When it was like that, they asked for a whole song and I did one too, Hautamäki remembers.

Hautamäki originally received the honor from his bassist colleague, who did not feel the task was his own. Hautamäki thought about the initial spark and got one from the movie Quadrophenia. The film deals with English youth culture, mod.

– In the film, there was a youth group of mods who marched down the street and shouted we are the we are the we are the mods. I thought it had a well-known hokema.

The words we are the we are the we are the kings came to Hautamäki’s mind.

– It was a different thing, but I found the rhythm there. When making a song, there is a white paper in front of you, so you always have to start from somewhere. I left it.

We are the Kings was played as Ilves’ goal song for the first time in the 1989–1990 season.

– After all, it’s been playing Herranjumala for 40 years. A good piece was made at once.

Could Hautamäki design a new goal hall for Tappara? According to Hautamäki, this would be a bad thing to do.

– However, Life is life has been around for ages. Probably for the next 50 years no one will take it away.

– It would be difficult to start thinking. Killing money is a double-edged sword, so maybe you could take an axeman-style approach to it, Hautamäki jokes.

Rock and roll saved sports

Hautamäki is not passionate about sports, but he enjoys, for example, hockey matches.

– I think it’s exciting to go on the spot and watch when the big men measure each other and the little rubber band.

When he was young, he played hockey at school and also with his friends. When the others started putting on their stilettos, Hautamäki was strumming the guitar.

– At school we played hockey and hung out with our friends a bit, but otherwise rock and roll saved me from sports, Hautamäki smiles.

New winds are blowing in Popeda. Soloist Pate Mustajärvi left the band last year and was replaced Ollie Herman at the start of this year.

From the point of view of hockey, Tappara’s man changed to KalPa’s man, because Herman is a staunch supporter of the Kuopio club.

– He also follows Tappara’s matches, says Hautamäki.

According to Hautamäki, the band’s new era has gotten off to a good start. Popeda has already performed two gigs in Tampere.

– They went well. Let’s see how the rest of Finland reacts.

Back to the championship party?

According to Hautamäki, we will see at least a 50th anniversary concert from Popeda. He is interested in the future.

He recently received a message from the music teacher of children aged 9–11. They wanted to learn how to play On the Road to Alabama.

– I sent the boys a lot of greetings that you have chosen a good course.

– I started to think that they are ten years old now. It will be a little over 50 years for Popeda to turn 100 years old. The boys are only 60 years old at that point. Yes, the Popeda centenary concert might take place, Hautamäki laughs.

Tappara can secure its third consecutive Finnish championship on Sunday. Hautamäki says that he has been quite often to play at Tappara’s championship party.

– The request comes at a very short notice, but all the guys in the band are in Finland. Let’s hope I call, but I can’t be sure if they will call me.

– It’s always an honor. After all, you have to play Mää ja Tappara man, Matkalla ala Alabama and, of course, Kuuma summer.
