“This is against the law”

Mona Brorsson and Linn Persson are two real favorites in biathlon.
At home in Torsby, they are extremely appreciated and were presented with a nice gift.
But now it turns out that the gift is illegal.

In Swedish biathlon, the sisters are Hanna Öberg and Elvira Öberg the big poster names on the women’s side. Alongside them, the national team colleagues get Lynn Persson and Mona Brorsson not nearly as big headlines.

All four biathletes together wrote blue and yellow sports history when they won Sweden’s first Olympic gold in a biathlon relay during the Winter Olympics in Beijing 2022. The municipality of Torsby wanted to draw attention to this in the best possible way and pay tribute to the great heroes of the area in Brorsson and Persson.

But now it turns out that Torsby happened to promise too much and that the nice gift is in fact illegal, reports the local newspaper Nya Wermlands-Tidningen.
– I would say that this is completely crystal clear that it violates the municipal law, says Olle Lundinprofessor of administrative law, to the newspaper.

Neither Mona Brorsson nor Linn Persson lives in Torsby right now and opens up the municipality’s actions, which have proven to be a criminal act.
– It is a great act and a nice gesture from the municipality, that they want to pay attention to us. But of course it has to go right. You become so grateful when you are welcomed home in that way, says Persson to the newspaper.

While Torsby’s municipal councilor Peter Johnson defends the gifts to the biathletes. And the reason they promised two plots of land is because they want to celebrate and reward famous people, rather than highlight individual companies.
