Between cliffs, moorland and majestic fort, it is the most impressive site in the Brittany region.
Brittany is one of the most attractive regions of France, rich in unique and magical destinations, between ocean lands and green lungs, picturesque cities and ports, medieval castles, menhirs and dolmens, Vauban fortifications, pink granite rocks, bays, golf courses, capes and salt marshes. There are many discoveries to be made among the myriad of natural, historical and architectural riches it shelters. But what should we explore first if we had to choose only one of all these attractions?
Between cliffs of schist and pink sandstone and a blue sea tinged with emerald, Cap Fréhel is undoubtedly the most spectacular site in the Brittany region, located in the Côtes-d’Armor department. In the summer, the site offers a symphony of colors that remains forever etched in our memories, between the pink-purple of the cliffs and the 400 hectares of flowering heather. From autumn to winter, the rough sea laps against the cliffs, with a color that oscillates between blue, gray and green, a gradient typical of Brittany, changing according to the light. On a clear day, the view extends from the Cotentin and Jersey, to Paimpol. A panorama that we will never tire of…
Overlooking the sea by more than 70 meters, Cap Fréhel brings together spectacular cliffs, a bird sanctuary called “le rocher de la Fauconnière”, an old lighthouse built by Vauban in the shape of a round tower in pink sandstone, as well as a magnificent keep that can be discovered during a completely timeless walk… To get to the famous Fort La Latte, take a coastal path in a loop of the GR34 which allows you to go around the cape from Anse du Croc to Pléhérel, a total distance of 6 kilometers, or 1h30 of walking without great difficulty, provided you wear good shoes. On either side of the cape, wild beaches are available to you, like the beach of Sables-d’Or-les-Pins, one of the most beautiful beaches in Brittany or even the beach of Les Grèves d’en Bas, a srenowned surf pot.
The natural area of Cap Fréhel has been labeled “Grand Site de France” since 2019. So don’t miss a visit to Fort la Latte, a true Breton medieval treasure built in the 14th century which has served as a setting for several films, as well as discovering its ornithological reserve where thousands of birds such as gannets, cormorants, gulls and also the Razorbill have found refuge. Don’t wait any longer, head to the king of the Capes to discover Brittany!
